Venus takes flight
artist’s statement
While surveying the colourful songbird collection at the Beaty Biodiversity Museum at the University of British Columbia, I couldn’t help musing about the parallels in human and animal behavior - especially with respect to visual display as a mechanism for attracting a mate. Nowhere is this more evident than in the world of fashion.
Using a high-resolution scanner as a camera and the design vehicle Photoshop, I have combined fabric and feather scans into single integrated images. In some the fabric dominates, in others the feathers stand out. The sensuous tactility of the subject matter is maintained throughout the series through colour, texture and/or pattern.
The individual print titles are phrases drawn from the Nature of Things (c.54 BC) by the Roman poet Lucretius.
This series was exhibited in conjunction with garments by Japanese-Canadian fashion designer Terry Sasaki at Visual Space Gallery in Vancouver in 2018. These prints are available for purchase through Visual Space Gallery, Vancouver or by contacting the artist.
